Watching  Donnie Darko (2001) and  Office Space (1999) made me revisit books that were published around t he turn of the millennium. All that time in the kitchen made me reach for my cookbooks again and start thinking about each recipe as a short story plus actually reading the stories the chef-authors included. What Im most excited about is that my creative block has melted and Ive been writing work thats more alive than I have written in ages, edgier and fresher, with immediacy I havent reached in years. I also scrutinized my unhealthy relationship to reading. For so long, Ive been chasing numbers with my reading, pushing myself to read as much as I can, at whatever cost, even if I was burned out, and even if I was reading some uninspiring books that I couldnt break away from and risk losing my momentum. Naval Battles The battle on March 9, 1862, between the USS Monitor and the CSS Merrimack, officially the CSS Virginia, is one of the most revolutionary naval battles in world history. Up until that point, all battles had been waged between wooden ships. This was the first battle in maritime history that two ironclad ships waged war. The USS Merrimack was a Union frigate throughout most of its existence, up until the Union Navy abandoned the Norfolk Naval Yard. To prevent the Confederate Navy from using her against them, the Union Navy scuttled her. The Confederates, however, raised the ship from the shallow floor of the ocean and began making some major modifications. Confederate engineers cut the hull down to the water line and built a slanted top on it. Then, they bolted four layers of iron sheets, each two inches thick, to the entire structure. Also added was a huge battering ram to the bow of the ship to be used in ramming maneuvers. The ship was then fitted with ten twelve-pound cannons. There were four guns placed on the starboard and port sides, and one on the bow and stern sides. Due to its massive nature the ship's draft was enormous, it stretched twenty-two feet to the bottom. The ship was so slow and long, that it required a turning radius of about one mile. Likened to a "floating barn roof (DesJardien 2)" and not predicted to float, the only individual willing to take command of the ship was Captain Franklin Buchanan. After all the modifications were complete, the ship was rechristened the CSS Virginia, but the original name the CSS Merrimack is the preferred name. The USS Monitor was the creation of Swedish-American engineer, John Ericsson. The ship was considered small for a warship, only 172 feet long and 42 feet wide. Confederate sailors were baffled by the ship. One was quoted describing her as ". . . a craft such as the eyes of a seaman never looked upon before, an immense shingle floating on the water with a giant cheese box rising from its center" (Ward 101). The "cheese box" was a nine by twenty foot revolving turret with two massive guns inside. "The USS Monitor used two of the eleven inch Dahlgran guns . . ." (Lavy 2). These Dahlgran guns were massive rifled cannons that were capable of firing a variety of shot. The armor of this ship was a two-inch thick layer of steel that shielded the ship. The deck was so low to the water line, about one foot, which waves frequently washed over the deck causing the ship to lose its balance in the water. Due to the low profile, the entire crew was located below the water line, so one armor-piercing hit would kill the entire crew. Like the CSS Merrimack, the USS Monitor was expected to sink, it was referred to as "Ericsson's Folly" (DesJardien 2). The only individual willing to take command of the ship was Lieutenant John Worden. The battle at Hampton Roads was part of the Peninsula Campaign that lasted from March to August of 1862. There was a total of five ships engaged in the battle. From the US Navy, there were four ships, the USS Congress, USS Minnesota, USS Cumberland, and the USS Monitor. The CS Navy had one ship, the CSS Merrimack. On March 8, 1862, the CSS Merrimack steamed into Hampton Roads. She proceeded to sink the USS Cumberland and then ran the USS Congress aground. Captain Buchanan then set his sights on the already handicapped USS Minnesota. The USS Minnesota was run aground on one of the shores. Capt. Buchanan did not know, but the USS Monitor was lying in wait, ordered to protect the wounded USS Minnesota. Lt. Worden steamed out into the middle of the bay to meet the CSS Merrimack. The USS Monitor fired first in a drawn out battle that lasted about four and a half hours. "They fired shot, shell, grape, canister, musket and rifle balls doing no damage to each other" (Lavy 3). After four and a half hours, the CSS Merrimack withdrew due to falling tides. The USS Monitor did not make chase because of a crack in the turret. The results of the battle were inconclusive, neither side could claim victory. The estimated casualties resulting from the battle were extensive. Going back to time, black people have been portrayed as the villains and white people as heroes. This had a major impact on the audience by showing that every person should be equally treated, it does not matter of their skin colour or race. People have never expected this kind of situation so the director thought to make a film on a life of an unsuccessful town with unemployed people of what they can do or have done to earn money. This film gives out a message of unemployed workers of how extreme they got just to e arn money to live and feed. This happened because the people living there were unemployed as all the mines was closed because of Margret Thatcher, as the workers did not have any degrees to work in other places they had to try and get any kind of work they can get just to live from it. In the beginning of the film the introduction starts of with the history of Sheffield and tells us what happened during early 70s when Margret Thatcher was prime minister of the UK. In the early 80s people of Sheffield became unemployed and started living on benefits. This creates an affect on how the film is going to start off and also gives an idea of what people did to earn money in them conditions. Comparing to the Sheffield now it is unsuccessful and many people live in benefits with no qualifications. This affects with people as they would want to come and join in other citys to earn money, also it would make the town less populated with many waste materials. In the movie now it shows an opening of the town with 3 people stealing from a mining factory. They got an idea from a mens stripping club to employ themselves to be earning money, this shows that many people were desperate to earn money and they took any opportunities that came to them. Camera angles have many meanings behind the characters representation because it shows the sympathy from sounds to camera shots. In this film many angles are based on long shots because when they are stripping they would be in a line to strip. In a single man shot they would use medium close up to present that they are the ones who are talking. People who have been unemployed from a long time did not have enough qualifications to do jobs such as business man, teacher and etc. This made Sheffield a very poor town in terms of its state. Going on to the peoples status it has been constructed in the characters via what they do, what they wear and their living environment. Looking at The Full Monty classification plays the most important role because the characters were stealing in the beginning of the movie which shows that they are homeless and are in need of money. Introducing Bend it Like Beckham, directed by Gurinder Chadha was a big super hit by representing the social realism in Britain with a different culture but the same everyday problem. This film was made for people who wanted to know the everyday life of a citizen in Britain and what can happen in an everyday life. It was also made for people to see how different culture is with Britain. In the opening of Bend it Like Beckham the main character dreams about playing with England one day and meeting David Beckham. As in The Full Monty the opening includes information about Sheffield in the past and later on shows the present day in Sheffield and how people live there. The opening includes father, son and friend stealing from a mining factory to live off and to feed them selves. In the film Britain was represented as less employment with more people leaving the city. The British citizens were free, no employment and willing to do any job which comes just to live with their familys, the film also includes lies with their own family. The music which plays in Bend it Like Beckham is very slow and sad which shows that in the movie there are a bit sad moments. This shows Britain as a multi cultured country with an Asian area location which the film is set. In comparison to The Full Monty the music is RB and Reggae to make them strip following the music. As for the location it was really perfectly set in Sheffield as what can the everyday life could be if there is no work to do and how desperate they were for working. This suggests Britain was a country with less work and more people unemployed. In Bend it Like Beckham the main characters were females because the girl loved football and wanted to play for a team one day but her parents did not let her because she was a girl in an Indian family. Indian families always stereotype with their daughters because they always want them home early, look out for them and they always start to worry about their daughters if their late. Indian families treat females differently because they are over protective and more caring with their daughters. The female characters were shown playing football when the men do it the most. Comparing with The Full Monty the males were doing stripping rather than females doing it just to earn money and the females were doing other jobs to earn money for their family. Bend it Like Beckham explores a different world to that explored in The Full Monty because Bend it Like Beckham looks at life of a different culture family living in Britain. The Full Monty looks at life with no work and what can happen when youre really desperate for working. Britain has been given an impression of independence and free to go any where, the issues in Bend it Like Beckham are very different to The Full Monty but they are in the same genre. These films are different to each other because social realism can include many everyday problems and put into movies. Britain and British people have similarities and difference, as Britain is independent and British people would enjoy the freedom and be independent to do anything they would like. I think there are representations to show people how they can be aware of everyday problems and what can a person do to just to earn a bit of money and living it off. The normal things in Bend it Like Beckham are; the parents not wanting the child to do anything that they do not like and the children telling lies to their parents. As for The Full Monty normal things are being unemployed and looking for a job or willing to take any job. I think that Britain has been represented as a multicultural country which because it shows an everyday problem of citizens in Britain. From experiences of my life I have faced a lot of social problems and racism because I was a non British citizen. In my opinion every non British citizen has faced racism. These representations showed in the movies are very realistic as these days there are many different cultures such as Asian, African, American and etc. They are all joint together as friends, this show that as a British citizen anything can happen in an everyday life. Media could stereotype anyone as it is a realistic thing, as stereotyping a culture media could promote social realism and make it more interesting for the audience to watch a different cultured familys going threw social realism. My own opinion of representations is; that its the way how people present themselves or their culture in a multicultural environment.

It is better to have year round school as opposed to tradition school because when having year round school schools take more frequent breaks throughout the year.These more frequent breaks cause kids to have less stress and without the huge summer break you are not losing the knowledge that you have already learned throughout the year. By going to the year round school system there is no longer the long three-month summer break. However without the summer break it allows for schools to make for more frequent, weeklong, breaks throughout the year. Some schools, instead of taking breaks throughout the year, only go to school for three or four days a week to even out the time that summer break had give n kids before.Having a traditional school year and less school per week will cause kids to have less stress that everyday school brings to them now.
